Hours of Solar Cooking

by Lufuno
(South Africa)

I just want to know how many hours does it take to cook using different solar cookers.

_____________________________________________

Greetings Lufuno,

Thank you for visiting our site and for your solar cooking question.

The time it takes to solar cook something can depend on a variety of factors.

  • The amount of food
  • The size of your solar cooker
  • Time of the day
  • Style, or kind of cooker.
  • Etc., Etc.

A solar box cooker, well built and insulated usually cooks a little better than a solar panel cooker, and a parabolic can cook faster than both of them.

I have cooked two whole chickens in my Sun Oven and my SOS Sport Oven in about three to five hours, depending on the time of year and time of day.
In the winter I can cook whole chickens but I have to start later and finish earlier in the day because the sun is low on the horizon.

I can bake a batch of cookies in my Global Sun Oven in about 10-12 minutes.
I bake two loaves of bread in my Sport Oven and two in my Sun Oven in about 60-70 minutes.

I will cook a pot of beans (chili) in my Hot Pot Solar Panel cooker for 5-6 hours so that beans are soft and the flavors are enhanced. For stew, soup, beans, meats it is usually better to leave them longer time at moderate temperatures so that they stay moist, juicy, and flavorful.

I boiled a medium sized pot of Potatoes on my Parabolic Solar Cooker the other day in about 20-30 minutes and I also deep fried some scones (biscuits)on the parabolic as well.

Those are just some ideas for how long it can take to cook with a solar cooker.
