Cooking in the Park: Solar Saturdays

I have just moved into an apartment that is immediately adjacent to one of the nicer parks in our area. There are mountain biking and hiking trails, tennis courts, dog runs, an archery range...the whole shabang.

I've had two hangouts so far this summer, where we set up in the park with some hammocks and music. I'm considering making it a weekly thing.

The last solar hangout we had, I had quite a few people coming by and gawking at the SolSource. It was towards the end of the day, and we were beginning to lose sun, so I used the SolSource to quickly grill some hot dogs and hamburgers, and the ASSC to function as a warmer. It kept the burgers hot while I waited for my friends to arrive for small group.

I had two conversations with individuals who were drawn in by the yearbook ASSC that my students had signed, and then they felt comfortable enough to start asking questions about the solsource.

I demonstrated for one of them how powerful it can be, even in late evening sun by setting a stick ablaze within a few seconds of being in the SolSource's focal point :)

...For the internet safety police, don't worry - I had 5 gallons of water for drinking right next to me as I performed my demonstration.

I am hoping that it catches on, but unfortunately I went on a vacation before Solar Saturdays really got some momentum. I'm hoping that my roommates will be interested in coming and inviting their friends (and funds! Hamburgers/Hot Dogs/Buns aren't exactly cheap!)

This is really interesting! I would love to start solar saturday's at my own college. I wanted to see if you would be interested in meeting with me over zoom or the phone so we could discuss more of the details of how you were able to implement these days and which solar cooker designs were most effective for them?

My email is afile@uncc.edu if you could please email me back and let me know if any particular day / time would work best for your schedule.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!

Great way to spend a day in the park...with a solar cooker.

I too have used the solar cookers over the years for conversation pieces as well as the useful tool they are...cookers.

People can't resist the sight and their curiosity gets to them.
