Solar Cooking Demo in Cedar City, UT

by Joyce Lee
(UT)

I had a last minute invite to do a demo in Cedar City, UT on June 21st 2012, Longest day of the year!
I went willingly because I love to share Solar Cooking and also I was hoping to escape the intense summer heat in my hometown, since Cedar is usually 10 degrees cooler than here.
Road construction in 2 different places slowed me down considerably so I didn't arrive with much time to get all the cookers set out and food prepped.
One of the items on the menu was corn on the cob and since I knew I'd be pressed for time, I pulled off the hair poking out of the tops of the husks and put the 12 ears of corn husk on and all in my Sport oven in the back of my truck. I had the sun behind me most of the way up and without reflectors, the Sport was at 200 by the time I arrived at my destination. This really cut down on the time it took to finish after I got to the Demo.
I got everything set up and food in with only 2 1/2 hours to cook for 30-40 people. We had Italian Meatball Sandwiches on rolls (the meatballs were still half frozen when I got there so I cut them in quarters before putting the sauce on to make sure they cooked thoroughly.), Corn on the cob, Party baked beans,Chicken and Rice and Lemon Glazed Cake. It was a pretty ambitious menu for cooking that late in the afternoon for that many.
Surprisingly, hardly anyone there had ever seen Solar Cooking, and most assumed that all you could do with Sunshine is warm up already cooked food.
That really fired up my "passion" button and by the end everyone there knew how and why and where to use a Solar Cooker and how tasty the reward for doing so is! Including the Dutch Oven Chef who was there doing dutch oven potatoes and fruit cobblers.
It was a yummy fun time for us all!

Sounds Like you were out to get people "fired" up with your enthusiasm for Solar Cooking...and the best way to do that is a hands on demo.

Thanks Joyce
